Famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted came to Buffalo more than 130 years ago to consult on a park project. He believed parks were places where city dwellers could enjoy scenery designed to “refresh and delight the eye and through the eye, the mind and spirit.”

This philosophy inspired Buffalo’s park and parkway system – a wealth of cultural gems that sparkle in virtually every urban neighborhood, creating one interconnected community. Olmsted chose several green spaces in the area and linked them to form the first of its kind – a park system now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
